X-Men complete weekend sweep over Sea-Hawks with 88–84 victory Saturday night
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. – The STFX X-Men completed a weekend sweep over the Memorial Sea-Hawks with an 88–84 victory Saturday night at The Fieldhouse in AUS men's basketball action.
In a game that featured multiple lead changes and big performances on both sides, the X-Men used a balanced offensive attack and strong rebounding to outlast the home team in the final minutes.
Fourth-year guard DJ Jackson led the way for STFX with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Phoenyx Wyse turned in a dominant double-double performance with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Nicolas Niare added 16 points and five boards before fouling out, and Owen Frayne provided a key spark off the bench with 16 points and a team-high six assists.
After trailing 22–21 after the first quarter, the X-Men exploded for 28 points in the second frame to take a 49–41 lead into halftime. Memorial responded with a 28-point third quarter of their own, briefly reclaiming the lead behind hot three-point shooting, but STFX held firm down the stretch with clutch free throws and timely defensive stops to seal the win.
Koat Thomas chipped in nine points and seven rebounds, while rookie Dakoda Lewis contributed valuable minutes off the bench with four points and 10 rebounds. STFX won the rebounding battle 53–49 and dominated inside with 32 points in the paint.
For Memorial, Jodick Moudiandambu led all scorers with 20 points and eight rebounds. Norm Burry added 17 points, while Andrew Robinson knocked down four three-pointers en route to 15 points. Josh Reimer and Ethan Conway each chipped in nine off the bench as the Sea-Hawks hit 16 three-pointers at a high 47% clip.
Despite their shooting success, Memorial struggled at the free throw line, converting just 10-of-24 attempts (41.7%), while STFX went 22-of-32 (68.8%) from the stripe — a key difference in the four-point result.
With a 2-0 start to the season on the road, the X-Men will shift their focus to their home opening game, scheduled for 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening, October 29th on Coach K Court.
