X-Men fall to Capers
The X-Men basketball team fell 88-83 in a hard fought match against the CIS ranked No. 6 Cape Breton Capers Wednesday night in Sydney, N.S.
Cape Breton was led by Jimmy Dorsey who scored a game-high 34 points and also added 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. He was 6 for 8 from three-point range. Shaquille Keith scored 15 points, Arild Geugjes had 14 points and 7 rebounds, while Sean McCormick contributed 12 points and 9 rebounds.
The Capers held leads of 30-26 afetr the first quarter and 40-35 at half-time. The second half was a tight scoring affair, as the X-Men held even with the home team 48-48.
Leading the X-Men on the score sheet was Jeremy Dunn with 32 points, including 10 for 13 from the free throw line. Jordan Clarke scored 14 points for the blue and white, while Terry Thomas scored 13 and added 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Tyrell Vernon scored 10 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.
StFX was 45.2% in field goal shooting, 35.0% from the three-point arc and 71.4% in free throw shooting. The Capers were 48.0% from the floor, 40.0% in three-pointers and 54.5% from the free-throw line.
With the loss, the X-Men drop to 1-1 on the season, while the Capers are 3-0 to start the year. Next on the schedule for StFX is a pair of home games on the Oland Centre court this coming weekend. They will host UPEI (2-0) in their home opener Saturday night at 8:00 pm, followed by a 3:00 match Sunday against the UNB Varsity Reds (0-2).
