WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axemen soccer team improved to 6-1-1 with a convincing hard fought 2-0 win over the CIS No. 5 ranked StFX X-Men (5-1-2).
The Axemen struck early at the 22 minute mark when Travis Fenning (Ottawa, Ont.) assisted on a Tylor Connolly (Quisspamsis, N.B.) eventual game winning goal.
The Axemen edged the X-Men with nine shots compared to StFX's eight, but Acadia tested X-Men keeper Thomas Pieroway (Conception Bay, Nfld.) with six shots. Acadia's Nigel Goodwin made four stops for the Axemen.
Acadia's second goal came in the 67th minute in the second half when Matthew Berrigan (Halifax, N.S.) picked up his seventh goal of the season on a mishandled ball by Pieroway.
StFX had limited success due to the defensive effort of Subway Player of the Game Ryan Parris (Pembroke, Bahamas) and veteran defender Andrew Snyder (Bridgewater, N.S.). X-Men's Dan Hayfield (Exeter, UK) earned StFX's Player of the Game.
The Axemen host the Dalhousie Tigers this Friday night.
StFX X-Men travel to Mount Allison this Friday and then continue into N.B. to take on UNB on Saturday.
