Benoit sets U SPORTS qualifying time in 3000m at SMU Open
X-Men and X-Women compete in final meet prior to AUS championship at the SMU Open
Halifax, NS – The X-Men and X-Women Track teams competed in their final meet prior to the AUS championship this past Saturday at the SMU Open, held at the Canada Games Centre.
STFX runners competed in the 1000m, 1500m and 3000m events over the course of the day.
Veteran X-Women runner and 2024 AUS individual cross country champion Eileen Benoit took top spot in the 3000m race with a time of 9:34.83. The time was good enough to automatically qualify her for the U SPORTS Championship in March.
Also competing in the 3000m for the X-Women were Rebecca Haney in 10th place with a 10:34.26 result, Eden Hildebrand (10:37.68), Quincy Rotsaert-Smith (10:40.56) and Poppy Thomson (10:42.26) who placed 11-12-13, respectively.
In the women's 1500m race, Caden Lee and Caroline Ash finished 1-2 for STFX. Lee clocked in 4:29.12, while Ash's time was 4:30.52.
The 1000m race featured three X-Women racers, including Poppy Moon in fourth place with a 3:01.78 result. Jillian Bennett was ninth at 3:13.48, and Maya Black tenth at 3:14.49.
In the men's 1000m race, Liam Patterson was the top X-Men finisher in third place, crossing the line at 2:35.18. Landyn Cooke-Brithrey came sixth at 2:42.21.
Patterson also came third in the 1500m, finishing at 3:54.10. His teammates Liam McCullagh (4:00.53), Griifin Gamble (4:00.79) and Mathew Lawton (4:02.4) were 4-5-6.
Rounding out the X results for the day were five X-Men in the 3000m race. Brett King claimed top spot with a time of 8:21.06. It was a STFX sweep as Luke MacDonald (8:38.85), Joel Gallant (8:41.87), McCullagh (8:58.49) and Andrew Lupenette (9:02.12) placed second through fifth places, respectively.
The X racers will now have a couple weeks off as they prepare for the AUS Championship, taking place February 21-22 at the Irving Oil Fieldhouse in Saint John, NB. Qualifying times form the conference event will send representatives to the U SPORTS national championship being held at the University of Windsor March 6-8.
