First place Huskies handle X-Women

The X-Women basketball team were in tough Sunday afternoon against the CIS ranked No. 4 Saint Mary’s Huskies, losing 94-57 in Halifax.
CIS leading scorer Justine Colley paced the Huskies attack, scoring 31 points. She also had 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and a block. Colley was coming off a 39 point performance in Saint Mary’s 75-67 win over UNB Friday night. The Huskies are undefeated at 11-0 atop the AUS conference.
Laura Langille had a double-double game for SMU with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Naomie Freguiere scored 12 (all from three-point range) and Angelina Carvery had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Amanda Smith grabbed 11 boards for the Huskies, nine of them in the defensive end.
Lia St. Pierre was the high scorer for the X-Women with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Kolbi Roper scored nine and added five rebounds, while Vanessa Pickard contributed eight points.
The Huskies jumped out of the gate with a 26-14 first quarter lead, then outplayed the X-Women 27-8 in the second quarter for a convincing 53-22 halftime lead. The blue and white were unable to overcome the deficit in the second half, though they did outpace the Huskies 18-16 in the third frame.
Saint Mary’s was 42.4% from field goal range, compared to the X-Women’s 29.0%. StFX was 1-17 (5.9%) in three-point shooting, while the Huskies were 30.0% (10 for 33). SMU also held the advantage from the free throw line at 84.8% compared to StFX’s 72.7%.
The X-Women will need to regroup for their next opponent. They are scheduled to host the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Jan. 26th and 27th at the StFX Oland Centre. Game time on Saturday night is 6:00 pm followed by a 12:00 pm tip-off on Sunday afternoon. Both game are worth four points in the AUS standings.
The Sea-Hawks are in fifth place with 12 points and a 5-7 record. They are coming off a weekend split with Dalhousie. The X-Women (6-5) are tied for third place with Acadia as each team has 22 points in the standings.
